Mentoring Program
The AFP WNC Mentoring Program is available to all AFP chapter members. Members can learn one-on-one from volunteer mentors about specific areas of interest, or give back by serving as a mentor, through our Mentoring Program.
Recognizing that as members we have both experience in areas of development/fundraising and want to share that with one another in a defined, outcome-based process. The program, supported by volunteer Mentors, encourages Mentees to continually develop skills and new alliances where necessary to achieve organizational and personal goals and objectives. It offers a setting where the Mentee can receive seasoned support from a Mentor.
Tell me more…
- The mentoring program offers a setting where the mentee can receive seasoned support from a mentor.
- Mentees can be adjusting to new positions or assignments at any point in their development career.
- Mentoring can be valuable to the executive director in a new position or to a senior staff member with new goals and objectives.
- The process can ensure that the Mentee develops healthy skills and does not develop a dependency on the coaching/mentor process or the Mentor.
- Participants are asked to report outcomes and offer suggestions to continually improve our program.
- Mentor partnerships vary in length of time, sometimes from 6 weeks to 6 months.
Program Requirements
- Mentors and mentees agree to adhere to the AFP Code of Ethics
- Neither party shall be expected to pick up the tab (i.e. food, events, activities, etc.)
- Upon being matched, the mentor and mentee will participate in an intial meeting to determine if they will be helpful to one another. At this meeting 1-3 specific goals to be accomplished within 6 months (or less) should be established.
- The mentee agrees to submit the agreed upon goals and meeting arrangements to the AFP Mentor Chair within one week of the initial meeting.
- Both mentor and mentee agree to participate in an exit survey.
- Under most circumstances, both parties agree to limit meetings to up to 2 hours per month for up to 6 months. After 6 months, the contract may be renewed for an additional 3 months if both parties deem this ideal.
- The mentee is encouraged to seek the approval of his/her supervisor and/or Executive Director prior to participation in the program.
